Catford Removals Health and Safety Commitment
Catford Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and storage activities.
Policy Objectives
Our primary health and safety objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our operations. We aim to achieve this by identifying and controlling risks, promoting safe working practices and continually improving our safety performance.
This policy applies to all employees of Catford Removals and to any contractors working on our behalf. Compliance with this policy is a condition of working for or with the company.
Legal and Regulatory Compliance
Catford Removals will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation, regulations and approved codes of practice relevant to our activities. We will also take into account industry guidance on safe removal operations, manual handling, driving and vehicle safety, and the use of work equipment.
Roles and Responsibilities
The management of Catford Removals has overall responsibility for ensuring that adequate resources are provided to implement this Health and Safety Policy. Managers and supervisors are responsible for promoting safe working practices, ensuring that risk assessments are carried out, and that appropriate control measures are implemented and maintained.
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly, and cooperate fully with health and safety measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will identify the hazards associated with our activities, assess the related risks and implement proportionate control measures. Particular attention will be given to manual handling, lifting and carrying, the use of trolleys and lifting aids, working in confined or restricted spaces, stairways and access routes, loading and unloading vehicles, and securing loads for transport.
Site-specific assessments will be undertaken where necessary, including at customers premises, to identify issues such as limited access, parking constraints, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, and weather conditions. Where risks are identified, safe systems of work will be developed, communicated and followed.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core aspect of our work and is a significant source of potential injury. We will minimise manual handling risks by using appropriate equipment, such as sack trucks, dollies, lifting straps and ramps, and by planning moves to reduce the need for carrying over long distances or up multiple flights of stairs.
All staff involved in lifting and carrying activities will receive suitable training in manual handling techniques, including team lifting, assessing loads, recognising personal limits and using mechanical aids safely. Equipment will be maintained in good condition and inspected regularly to ensure it is safe to use.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our drivers and crews operate vehicles that must be used safely at all times. Only authorised and competent drivers are permitted to operate company vehicles. Drivers must carry out pre-use checks, follow safe loading and unloading procedures and ensure loads are evenly distributed and properly secured.
Speed limits, parking restrictions and local road rules must be observed. Drivers must not use mobile phones or other distracting devices while driving, and must never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to drive safely. Journeys will be planned to allow adequate time, taking account of traffic, access restrictions and rest breaks.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
We recognise our responsibility to protect customers, visitors and the general public during removals work. Our crews will take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access to work areas, keep access routes as clear as practicable, and use safe lifting routes that minimise risks to others.
Where necessary, warning signs or verbal warnings will be used to alert people to moving loads, vehicle movements or temporary trip hazards such as ramps and equipment. Particular care will be taken in shared entrances, communal areas, pavements, car parks and other public spaces.
Training, Information and Supervision
Catford Removals will provide employees with appropriate training, information and instruction to enable them to work safely and competently. This includes induction training, manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety, incident reporting and emergency procedures.
Supervisors will monitor working practices on site and address unsafe behaviour or conditions promptly. Refresher training will be provided as necessary, and when there are significant changes in work methods, equipment or legislation.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as practicable. We will investigate incidents to determine root causes, identify lessons learned and take corrective action to prevent recurrence.
Records of accidents and incidents will be maintained and reviewed periodically to identify trends and opportunities for improving our health and safety performance.
Welfare and Occupational Health
We will take reasonable steps to safeguard the physical and mental wellbeing of our employees. This includes considering workload, hours of work and rest, and the physical demands of removals work. Employees are encouraged to report any health concerns that could affect their ability to work safely, including musculoskeletal problems and fatigue.
Suitable welfare arrangements will be made, so far as is reasonably practicable, including access to drinking water, rest breaks and sanitary facilities during the working day.
Emergency Preparedness
Our crews will be briefed on emergency procedures for fire, accidents, vehicle breakdowns and other unexpected situations. They must follow site-specific instructions when working at customer premises, including any local fire or evacuation procedures. Where necessary, vehicles will carry basic emergency equipment appropriate to the nature of the work.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Catford Removals values the input of employees in improving health and safety. We will consult with staff on safety matters and encourage suggestions for safer methods of working. Feedback from customers regarding health and safety issues will also be considered.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice or the nature of our operations. All revisions will be communicated to employees and contractors so that they remain aware of their responsibilities and of the company s commitment to safe removals services.
